Our bird houses feature 3/4'' thick pine, a clean out door, rough interior (aids fledgling
birds to leave the nest) Sloping roof. Each house has the appropriate size hole and floor size for the bird in question.
Each house has drainage holes and ventilation slots or holes. We include a metal hanger on some houses for your convenience.
Our bird houses are constructed using screws and glue or nails and glue, also sometimes staples. The gluing of the houses
is something most manufactures do not do, we do it because we truly want to make and sell a product we are proud of, a product
that lasts, for YOU.
Our bird feeders are handcrafted the same way,
with care, and with you the consumer in mind. We here at WestWind Bird Houses are consumers too of course, we know that it
is VERY frustrating to order a product and when it arrives to find it lacking in quality, or not as advertised.
It is recommended that our bird houses and bird feeders are protected with your
choice of protectant, if we have not already done that. We stay away from petroleum based products ourselves, so if we stain
a house or feeder we use water based stains.
We like to use
a water based "waterproofer / sealer" on our bird houses and feeders, as well as protecting the wood it also helps
to keep the interior of the nest box dry. Each fall, when the nesting season is over, we recommend cleaning out your nest
boxes, then wash the interior with a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, leave open so the interior can air dry.
After it is dry, give it a quick coat of waterproofer on the exterior only, the waterproofer could be done every two years
if desired. Most waterproofer's can be used on fabric (sun umbrella's) on concrete (cement side walks or patio's, cement garden
figures) check the product label for details, it's a handy item to have around.
Bird feeders are a place where many birds come in close contact with each other and because of that there is an increased danger of disease
among them, by having more bird feeding stations, you help in keeping disease to a minimum and also it relieves stress caused
by over crowded feeders. To help prevent illness caused by old seed, we recommend cleaning out your feeders once a month,
giving them a wash in a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, then allow to air dry before putting to use again. Please
do not throw any remaining old seed on the ground, but dispose of it in the compost or trash.
